Our associated company Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy producer, has received the battery energy storage system (BESS) that will be hybridised with part of its wind farm repowering project at the Montes de Cierzo wind farm, in the Navarra municipality of Tudela. This is the first battery system installed by the company in Spain.
The system comprises six lithium-ion battery containers, with a total installed power of 14.26 MW and a storage capacity of 28.51 MWh, with a two-hour charge and discharge time. Thanks to this installation, the wind farm will be able to manage energy during production peaks, when the grid is saturated, improving its efficiency and enhancing security of supply.
The project involves an investment of EUR 4 million and has received support from IDAE, funded through Next Generation EU funds. The company has made energy storage a priority in Spain and is processing a further eleven battery hybridisation projects with renewables in Galicia, Andalusia, Navarra and Extremadura, exceeding 200 MW in capacity.
The battery installation is part of the second and final phase of the repowering of the Montes de Cierzo wind farm, in which Statkraft has already replaced 44 wind turbines with 10 modern units and is now proceeding with the installation of 4 new turbines that will replace the last 41 machines from the original wind farm, commissioned in 2000.
Once completed, the repowered wind farm will reduce the number of turbines by 84% (from 85 to 14), increase installed capacity by 50% (from 60 MW to 90 MW) and double its annual clean energy production to reach 300 GWh. Montes de Cierzo will thus become one of Spain’s first repowered and hybridised wind farms, reinforcing Navarra’s role as a benchmark region in the energy transition.
