Our member Zabala Innovation celebrated its 40th anniversary with an event at the Navarra Arena, which brought together around 700 people and served to review the trajectory of the Navarre-based consultancy, as well as to reflect on the role of innovation and public-private collaboration in economic development.
Founded in 1986 by José María Zabala and Lía Versteeg, the company was created with the aim of helping businesses access public funding to develop technological and R&D projects, at a time when innovation was beginning to consolidate as a strategic factor for business competitiveness.
During the event, its founder recalled the beginnings of the project and highlighted the trust of the companies that supported the firm from its earliest days. Many of them, he noted, continue to collaborate with the consultancy four decades later, reflecting a relationship built on closeness and mutual trust.
Growth and internationalisation
Over the years, Zabala Innovation has evolved alongside the development of innovation policies and European R&D programmes, consolidating a clear international vocation. The opening of its Brussels office in 2003 marked a turning point in this strategy, which has since been strengthened with new offices in Spain and other European countries.
Today, the company has 13 offices and more than 600 professionals, and has supported more than 10,000 clients in projects related to public funding, tax incentives, sustainability and innovation strategy.
Generational transition and future outlook
The event also highlighted the generational transition within the family business, with the participation of Ainhoa Zabala, Erik Zabala and Unai Zabala, who emphasised the role of the team and the trust of clients and partners as key drivers of the organisation’s growth.
The day also included reflections on the future of business innovation, highlighting the importance of promoting projects with economic and social impact, as well as strengthening collaboration between companies, institutions and knowledge centres.
After four decades of activity, Zabala Innovation has established itself as a leading international consultancy in public funding and innovation strategy, maintaining its commitment to supporting projects that contribute to business competitiveness and economic transformation.
